  • Carrier Information: Confirm which carrier the number is currently ported to.
  • Carrier Type (Fixed or Wireless): Distinguish between landline and mobile numbers for optimized routing and messaging.
  • Federal DNC Status: Check if a number is on the federal Do Not Call registry, protecting your business from compliance risks.

Use Signalmash Query to reduce misdials, improve customer matching, and ensure every call is properly routed and compliant.

What phone number intelligence tells you, field by field

Phone number intelligence (also called number lookup, phone intelligence or line-type lookup) is a real-time query against carrier and registry databases that returns what is known about a telephone number before you call or text it. Signalmash Query returns four fields for US and Canadian numbers, each answering a different operational question.

Field
What it answers
What teams do with it
Line type (carrier type)
Is this a mobile, landline, VoIP or toll-free number?
Suppress landlines before an SMS campaign so you stop paying for messages that can never be delivered; route voice differently for VoIP endpoints; flag VoIP numbers in sign-up forms where fraud rings use disposable numbers.
Current carrier
Which network serves the number today, after any porting?
Pick the right route and predict carrier pass-through fees; spot a number that was ported recently (a common SIM-swap and account-takeover signal); reconcile delivery reports by carrier.
Subscriber name (CNAM)
What name is registered to the number in the caller-ID database?
Match inbound callers to CRM records, personalise greetings, detect mismatches between a form name and the registered name during onboarding.
Federal DNC status
Is the number on the National Do Not Call Registry, including additions in the last 30 days?
Scrub outbound marketing lists before dialling; keep an auditable record of when each number was checked. This is one input to TCPA compliance, not the whole of it (see below).

Four places a lookup pays for itself

Before a 10DLC or short code campaign. Consumer lists collected over years are typically 15 to 30 percent landline or disconnected. Every SMS to a landline is billed and never delivered, and a high failure rate on a new 10DLC campaign looks like spam to carrier filters. A line-type pass over the list before the first send removes both problems and pays for itself on the first campaign of any size.

At sign-up and checkout. A number that is VoIP, was ported in the last few days, or whose CNAM does not resemble the name on the form is not proof of fraud, but it is the cheapest risk signal you can add to an OTP flow: step up to a voice OTP or a manual review for the small share of sign-ups that trip the rules, and leave everyone else alone.

In the contact center. CNAM and carrier data on an inbound call let the agent see who is calling and confirm the caller's carrier matches the account on file, which shortens verification and catches social-engineering attempts that use a spoofed display number.

Before an outbound voice campaign. Federal DNC status plus line type tells the dialler which numbers may be called with an automated system at all, and which need a manual dial or should be skipped, before the campaign starts rather than after the complaint arrives.

Lookup methods compared

Method
Data source
Freshness
Best for
Registry lookup (line type, carrier, ported status)
Number Portability Administration Center and carrier block assignments
Updated as ports complete, usually within minutes
List hygiene, routing, port-recency checks
CNAM lookup
Carrier caller-name databases
Depends on how often each carrier updates its records; business numbers are more reliable than personal ones
Inbound identification, CRM matching
DNC scrub
National Do Not Call Registry
Registry data is refreshed on a rolling basis; keep a check date per number
Outbound marketing compliance
HLR or live-status ping
Signalling query to the mobile network
Real time, but only for mobile numbers and not offered by every carrier in North America
Confirming a handset is switched on before a time-critical message

Signalmash Query covers the first three methods from one API call or a portal upload, with results returned in real time for most numbers, and runs on the same account as your SMS API, voice and Branded Caller ID. Terms used above are defined in the telecom glossary.

What is phone number intelligence?

A real-time lookup that returns what carrier databases know about a phone number: line type (mobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free), the current carrier after porting, the registered caller name (CNAM) and, in the US, whether the number is on the federal Do Not Call list. It is used to clean lists, choose routes, verify identities and stay compliant before a message or call is sent.

Can a number lookup tell whether a number is VoIP or a cell phone?

Yes. Line type is derived from the carrier and number-block records, which identify wireless carriers, wireline carriers and VoIP providers. Numbers behind VoIP apps and virtual-number services are classified as VoIP, which is why many sign-up flows treat them as higher risk and ask for a second verification step.

Is a DNC check enough for TCPA compliance?

No. The National Do Not Call Registry governs telemarketing calls and texts to listed numbers, but the TCPA separately requires prior express written consent for marketing messages sent with an automated system, honouring company-specific opt-outs, calling-hour limits and, for texts, the 10DLC registration carriers require. Treat the DNC scrub as one mandatory step in a documented consent process and keep the check date with each record.

How accurate is carrier lookup for ported numbers?

Very accurate for US and Canadian numbers, because ports are recorded in the Number Portability Administration Center as they complete and lookups query that data rather than the original block owner. The exception is the first minutes after a port, and numbers outside the US and Canada, where data quality varies by country.

How much does a phone number lookup cost?

Signalmash prices lookups per query on its usage-based plans: carrier lookup (LRN, carrier name and line type), federal DNC lookup and inbound CNAM query are each $0.0015 per query on the Launch and Growth plans and $0.0013 on Scale (see the Identity section of the pricing page), so a one-off list clean and a per-sign-up check are billed the same way. Against it, a single undeliverable SMS costs a segment fee plus carrier pass-through, and a single fraudulent sign-up costs far more, which is why lookups are usually run on every record rather than a sample.
